Self-described as a “jour­nal­ist and journalism-academic inter­ested in peo­ple, pol­i­tics and the future”, Julie is an award win­ning, inter­na­tion­ally pub­lished aca­d­e­mic and for­mer ABC jour­nal­ist. She lec­tures in broad­cast jour­nal­ism at the Uni­ver­sity of Can­berra, blogs, and free­lances for tra­di­tional media, includ­ing an ongo­ing series on the effect of new media on tra­di­tional jour­nal­ism for PBS.

A Walk­ley final­ist in the inves­tiga­tive cat­e­gory and the win­ner of the Aus­tralian Human Rights Award for Radio, at 21 she con­vinced the ABC to put her in charge of the Illawarra news­room. After a stint with ABC TV Doc­u­men­taries, she went to Can­berra as a national polit­i­cal cor­re­spon­dent for AM and PM in the mid-90s. In 2003 she began her aca­d­e­mic career and won a national Car­rick Award for teach­ing in 2007.

Her PhD dis­ser­ta­tion is titled The Twit­ter­i­sa­tion of Jour­nal­ism. It will explore the impacts and effects of pro­fes­sional jour­nal­ists engage­ment with the news­mak­ing social media platform.
