Student Competition

At TEDxCanberra, we want all sorts of people involved. One of the groups we really want along are young people with big ideas – Year 11 and 12 students who are thinking way beyond and have ideas worth spreading.

So, we’re running a competition that’s open to senior high school students anywhere!

If yours is one of the 20 best entries, you’ll receive a free ticket to TEDxCanberra. If it’s one of the two best entries, you’ll get five minutes on stage to tell the audience how you are thinking way beyond and to tell us your idea worth spreading. You’ll be sharing the stage with some notable Australians, including Australian of the Year, Professor Pat McGorry, young think-tank director Miriam Lyons, pro-skeptic Ash Donaldson and respected indigenous elder, Tom Calma.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • make a video of 1 minute or less
  • write a piece of music or a song
  • make a piece of art (physical or digital)
  • or write a maximum of 400 words in any form

Once you’ve done that, post your piece on the web somewhere and email the URL to studentcomp@tedxcanberra.org. Include your name, email address, phone number and the name of your school. If it’s a physical entry that doesn’t have a digital component, photograph it and send the pictures to us.

The entries will be judged by the organising team and some of our speakers.

We’ll highlight the 20 best entries on the blog!

So, just a few rules and conditions:

  • the prize is a ticket only. We can’t afford to pay for your travel.
  • your entry must relate to the theme of TEDxCanberra - Thinking way beyond.
  • if you need it, we will make sure that a parent or teacher can be with you at TEDxCanberra by giving them a ticket too.

If you’d like to, you can download a poster about the competition to stick up at your school or show your teachers.

Entries open Thursday, June 24 2010 and close on 31 August 2010.
