Speaking at TEDxCanberra

We’re always looking for new voices and new ideas to add to the TEDxCanberra community.

Each TEDxCanberra conference features 15 – 20 of the region’s most innovative and influential voices. At TEDxCanberra, we search year-round for presenters who will inform and inspire, surprise and delight. If you know someone who belongs on the TEDxCanberra stage, or if you belong there yourself, we want to hear from you! Please use our speaker recommendation form.

About our speakers

At TEDxCanberra, we search year-round for presenters who will inform and inspire, surprise and delight. Our presenters are leaders and beginners, old and young, artists and teachers and researchers and business people. They are trusted voices and convention-breaking mavericks, icons, and geniuses.

We strongly bias our speaker and performer selection to those who are demonstrably “dirty up to their armpits” in their subject matter. We want adventurers, explorers, discoverers, changers, breakers of convention, scientists, teachers, artists, dancers, those breaking ground and building acceptance for the marginalised, and those examining the nexus between previously unexplored ideas.

We’re not interested in people who want to push their own agenda for personal gain, in motivational speakers for the sake of motivation, in self-help, business success, or self-improvement advisers and life coaches, in anyone promoting pseudoscience and woo, or those who have read about a topic and want to comment on it.

A TEDxCanberra speaker needs to be a doer as much as a thinker.

Multiple nominations for the same person won’t influence the speaker selection team in any way. We review every nomination that comes in, and it only takes one.

FAQ: Speaking at TEDxCanberra

TEDxCanberra isn’t a typical conference. The TEDxCanberra audience has high expectations of the speakers; theTEDxCanberra speaker team works with speakers well in advance of the conference to help shape a presentation that will succeed on the TEDxCanberra stage.TEDxCanberra is the place to give the talk of your life (well, unless you actually speak at TED).

How do I suggest a speaker?
Use our speaker recommendation form, and fill in as much information as you can. This form goes directly to our speaker selection team.

Can I suggest someone I don’t know personally? You ask for their email address, and I don’t know it.
Please do! Just let us know how you’ve heard about this person, and why you think they should speak at TEDxCanberra.

Can I suggest someone I work for or a client of mine?

Can I suggest myself as a speaker?

When will you get back to me?

Our team receives a large number of nominations each year and cannot guarantee they will respond to each nomination individually. If the team believes your idea might be suitable for TEDxCanberra either in the current year or for a later event, they will be in touch, but it might take some weeks or months.

No. Read more about partnering with TEDxCanberra. Sponsoring TEDxCanberra has many benefits, but a guaranteed speaking slot is not one of them.

Will it help if I submit multiple nominations, or have my friends nominate me several times?
No. It really only takes one suggestion.

Is there a deadline for suggesting a speaker?
We accept nominations all the time. It’s best to get your suggestions to us as early as possible, so we can research them carefully and make the best decision on the speaker roster.

We strictly enforce the clock for all speakers.TEDxCanberra is the place to condense your ideas into a compelling 18-minute or shorter talk that communicates your best ideas. We’ve found that a carefully prepared presentation of this length can have an astonishing impact.

Do you have keynotes or panels?
At TEDxCanberra, everyone hears every presentation; there are no breakout sessions or tracks, no keynotes, and very rarely are there panels.

What do you pay speakers?
TEDxCanberra does not pay speakers. We do, of course, cover travel costs and provide excellent hotel accommodation. Most speakers stay for the whole conference, soaking up the talks and connecting with other attendees. Other benefits include pre-conference coaching and training and special events for networking. We are committed to creating an experience that’s tremendously fulfilling and beneficial on all sides.

An additional benefit of speaking at TEDxCanberra is that your presentation may become a TED Talk. Not all talks given on the TEDxCanberra stage will automatically become online TED Talks, but we hope some do; of over 100 TEDxCanberra Talks so far, three have been selected for the main TED.com site.
