Suffering TED withdrawals now that TEDxCanberra 2011 is over? Come along to our next TEDxCanberraSalon and get inspired by some more ‘ideas worth spreading’!

We’re pleased to announce that our third TEDxCanberraSalon for 2011 will be hosted by the ANU Entrepreneurs Club this Wednesday 26 October at 6PM. The theme for this salon will be ‘Innovation and Enterprise’.

For those that aren’t familiar with TEDx salons, they’re basically mini-events that are run in between main TEDx events. They’re a great way of introducing new folks to the TED and TEDx experience and of taking a quick time-out to fill your head with some interesting material.

Everyone is welcome to attend this event regardless of whether or not you were able to make it to TEDxCanberra last month.

Attendance is free, but spaces are limited so if you’d like to come along please register.

My measure of a great TED talk is one that I can’t stop talking about — after all, TED is all about ‘ideas worth spreading’. So here are two talks that I’ve discovered since TEDxCanberra 2010 that fit that description!

Madeleine Albright: On being a woman and a diplomat

Before watching this TED talk, I have to admit that I knew very little about Madeleine Albright (except that she was former US Secretary of State) and my general impression of her was as a smart, but very serious politician and diplomat. So on watching this video I was pleasantly surprised by how open, funny and passionate she is. In this Q&A session she shares a number of fantastic stories that reflect her deep professional and personal commitment to helping other women.

Nancy Duarte uncovers the common structure of great communication

Nancy Duarte is an expert in presentation design, and in this talk from TEDxEast (November 2010) she certainly practices what she preaches. This talk reveals the surprisingly simple structure that the greatest communicators and persuaders have used over thousands of years and explains the essential qualities of an excellent presentation by analyzing the speeches of Martin Luther King and Steve Jobs. Worth a watch for anyone who wants to improve their ability to communicate (whether at home or at work).

TED is all about ideas worth spreading, right? So I figure that one the best indicators of an effective TED talk is that I end up raving about it to everyone and anyone who’ll listen! I’ve enjoyed tonnes of TED talks on a range of different topics, but I’m very conscious that there are a few that I talk about constantly. Here they are…

Dan Buettner: How to live to be 100+

National Geographic writer and explorer Dan Buettner studies the world’s longest-lived peoples, distilling their secrets into a single plan for health and long life.
